Isoform

The skill.

Ask for an object; get back a drawing that does something. It works in any agent that reads skills. Name an icon, or describe an idea and let it find one.

  1. 1.

    Find the icon

It searches the 1,007 Isocons by word, then prints every face of the one it picked and draws a numbered parts picture on a grid, so it can tell the lid from the body before it cuts anything.

  2. 2.

    Offer a concept

Two or three one-line stories: what the real object does, what hover changes, what gets traced. It waits for you to pick. Nobody around? It takes the most physical one and says so.

  3. 3.

    Write one file

The figure is a single script on a fixed engine. The agent groups faces into parts, writes the story in beats, and never edits the engine or the page around it.

  4. 4.

    Look at it

A script validates the file and photographs it at rest, answering, small, in both themes, with the effect on and at moments of its story. It also holds the story still at a dozen moments and fails any line that ends in the air. Then twelve yes-or-no questions, answered from the pictures.

  5. 5.

    Hand it over

One HTML file with the engine and the icon inside it, and the Isocons credit with them. Plus the metaphor in a line, the rules it leans on, and anything it could not check.

  6. 6.

    Adjust

Ask for a change and it edits only the figure, then looks again. The tenth version is held to the same bar as the first.

What came back.

Fig. 01 · Water Bottle

Written by hand alongside the skill: one of the three examples its agent reads before it builds.

Then askedNo dashed lines for the pour; let the water level tell it.

A bottle refills on its own: cap off, water in, cap on, a shake, a pour. Hover to take it and rock it.

Fig. 02 · Bolt

Written by hand alongside the skill: one of the three examples its agent reads before it builds.

A bolt in two halves charges: they part, current arcs across, they snap shut. Hold the seam to keep it open.

Fig. 03 · Rocket

Written by hand alongside the skill: one of the three examples its agent reads before it builds.

A rocket flies a loop: it lights, lifts off, hovers and lands. Bring the pointer near to hold the throttle.

Fig. 04 · Shopping cart

Then askedThe dust reads as stray marks. Drop something into it instead.

A box drops into a shopping cart; it dips under the weight and rolls on a step. Come near to lower the box in.

Fig. 05 · Shopping cart

/isoform-animate shopping-cart

A shopping cart is pushed off: it rolls along its wheels, scuffing dust, stops, and rolls home. Come near to push it.

Fig. 06 · House

/isoform-animate house sharp-top

A house, seen from the top: the lights come on and spill out of the doorway. Bring the pointer near to hold the light.

Fig. 07 · Directions car

/isoform-animate a car

Then askedThe beams look like planks. Make them cones of light.

A car switches its headlights on: low beam, high beam, out. Bring the pointer near the lamps to hold the beam.

Fig. 08 · Local gas station

/isoform-animate local-gas-station

A pump runs a sale: fuel rises in its glass, the nozzle clicks off and it slops, then it drains. Hold near the glass to run it.
